Who can forget the big reveal from the 2005 film “Serenity,” where we learn that the involuntarily drugged denizens of the planet (which shared the same name as the movie) had been made so pathologically and artificially serene that they just stopped: eating, or drinking, or moving, or living? Will the Buddha’s meditations do that to us?
Effective meditation harnesses the properties of our autonomic nervous system to liberate us from the two extremes of being scattered or controlling; setting us firmly upon the middle ground where our choices, utterances, and deeds could flow from a place of centered spontaneity. That is why we meditate like a Jedi.
