The older one is dopamine oriented and rewards us for mating, and all that supports it, like drinking, eating, and sheltering. The newer one is oxytocin oriented and rewards us for strengthening our relationships: professional, personal, platonic, and intimate.
The experience of stress pulls us into the ruthless under brain, where fear is lord. All stress, any stress, the stress of a full day’s work, the stress of a full night’s dreams, stress enslaves us to our destructive drives. That is why the Buddha taught: contemplation, kindness, enthusiasm, mindfulness, and meditation. That is why, every twelve hours, we could meditate like a Jedi.
