When I gaze upon
my eighteen year old self
and consider all
the betrayals, deprivations, and frustrations
hiding just below the horizon
of his life’s journey
this would be my cryptic charge:
“Rebellious, Taoist Buddhism.”
For if I learned sooner
that neither convention nor patriarchy
are repositories of wisdom, healing or good fortune;
how many more people
would I have been able to benefit?
Like Obi Wan Kenobi if he had learned of Anakin’s
border line personality disorder.
