spat vulgarities,

across the filled

trolley car,

at the three

African American youths.

Enraged,

(and understandably so),

they appeared to be

spoiling for a fight.

I raised my voice

to intervene:

“This man is a fool,

and a piece of garbage

and he deserves

all that is coming to him

but if you are the ones

to deliver it to him

then other racists

in polyester

will brutalize you,

and arrest you,

and throw you into a system

that will eat you alive.

This man is a fool,

and will come

to a fools’ end

but for the sake

of your girlfriends

for the sake

of your mothers

for the sake

of your grandmothers

do not let

this piece of garbage

drag you down

with him

like victims of the Titanic

sucked down to the bottom

of the north Atlantic

by the momentum

of the sinking vessel.”

Perhaps

the were fans

of James Cameron

for they departed

the trolley

at the next stop.
