How many souls has
Charon piloted across the river Styx?
And how many lamented, or raged,
or pleaded or bargained?
Greater in number, I’d wager,
than those who sat back
and enjoyed the journey.
Even rarer, in deed,
were those who joyfully spent their journey in play;
perhaps even imitating motorboat noises
as they did once as children.
Could our playfulness not be a litmus test
of our peace and spontaneity;
like Jake Skywalker in “The Last Jedi,”
who mocked Rey’s literal mindedness
by tickling her palm with a reed,
upon the forgotten isle of Ahch-to?
