The Mummy.
It was the Mummy that got me.
I was a very small child when I watched
the original, monochromatic, Universal Studios
version of “The Mummy” staring Boris Karloff.
The original stirring of the titular mummy
in the first reel was scary
but then nothing else very interesting seemed to happen
until the mummy shared his origin story with words and images.
The scene of his tongue being cut out
absolutely traumatized me.
And since then I’ve spoken through a clenched jaw,
reminiscent of Darth Malak.
Perhaps my inner child is trying to prevent
an ancient Egyptian official
from cutting out my tongue.
But fear is a path to the Dark Side,
and meditation an excellent balm.
