Superstition can be spooky, and fun, and exciting
especially at this time of year.
It promises health, riches, and love;
but it comes at a terrible price.
By externalizing the locus of power
it can infantilize fully functional adults
and exacerbate our controlling tendencies:
greedy and frightened.
Better, I think,
to follow the advice of the Tao Te Ching
and view yang and yin not as forces
(mysterious and occult)
but merely sets of world-views or strategies.
Lao Tzu’s advice
was to be defined by Yin
the way Garfield was defined
by his love of napping and lasagna.
Let us conclude
with a simple
call to action
In the Tibetan tradition Lamas are supported
not by monasteries but by students
