Falling Asleep while Meditating 24mar23

As a man with MANY disabilities

(and who really is

a dainty doily of a fellow)

.

.

.

my mid-meditation drowsiness

seems MOST effected

by whether or not I’m performing

a pre-meditation recitation,

.

and if so,

of which it is comprised.

.

.

.

Here, in our interdependent universe,

the recitation or chanting

of different sutras, shastras, or mantras

.

can effect us

in radically different ways.

.

.

.

And because our universe

is also impermanent,

the effects can shift

.

from hour to hour,

no less day by day.

.

.

.

Personally I find the twelve syllable mantra

of Buddha Shakyamuni

(Om Muni Muni Maha Muniye Soha)

to be the most energizing.

.

.

.

And I have found the same applies

to a downward facing gaze

(provided my posture is impeccable).

.

.

.

When it comes to respiration I have found

that lower-belly centered breathing

is much more energizing

than that which is nostril oriented.

.

.

.

I have also found

that, while subtle respiration

could make me drowsy,

.

more enthusiastic breathing

could keep me more alert.

.

.

.

I have found that active concentration

(upon an arbitrary object)

could be as exhausting

as it is unproductive

.

.

.

but that its opposite

(passive awareness

of whatever I happen to notice

in the moment)

.

.

.

could not only

be more energetically sustainable,

but more spiritually productive as well.

.

.

.

That is why I recommend

mentally reciting “Notice this…”

during each inhalation

.

and “relaxing!”

during each exhalation.

.

.

.

For it is during our OUT-breaths

that we have the opportunity

of our hang-ups to release. _/\_
