Both devotion (to a corporeal or heavenly parent) and love (for one’s fellow beings) could generate concentric waves of heart bliss. What, then, is the difference? The answer lies at the intersection of evolutionary biology and developmental psychology.
Mammalian infants are born with a strong devotion to both the milk and protection mother gives. With the arrival of puberty the vertical devotion of child to mother is replaced with love of individual to all others, flowing horizontally from the young adult’s heart.
