Sleep, Control, and Meditation - 15jan23

Our society trains us to yearn for superiority with which we may better accomplish worthy goals that others (or ourselves) might treat us with the respect that we crave. This can feed our controlling tendencies that often drive us to repurpose things and use them in ways they were never intended. For instance there are some who meditate in the hopes of reducing their need for sleep. But is that how it was intended to be used?

The stresses mentioned in the first noble truth are (according to the second noble truth) exacerbated by indulging our controlling tendencies to shove, or reach, or cling. Why did the Buddha teach contemplation, kindness, mindfulness, and meditation? To free us from the tyranny of our primal drives. Do you wish for greater peace, wisdom, joy, and love? Then take some time to really meditate like a Jedi.
