Yes, two strangers may enter a foxhole,

but if the barrage is heavy,

they leave as siblings.

Why is this?

As mammals we evolved to cooperate,

and our cooperation evolved

to ensure our survival.

The more profound the peril

the greater the trauma bond.

But let us not confuse that bond,

or its empathy,

for fate, or compatibility, or destiny, or love.

Especially if the trauma we experienced

was at the hands of the narcissist

we’ve bonded to.

For such a thing

is but a quirk of evolutionary biology

and not an exoneration

of abusive behavior.

No,

not at all,

not even a little bit.
