Eyes of Drowsiness and Distraction - 2dec22

All that could possibly undermine the Buddha’s meditative practices of noticing and letting-go could fall into one of two categories: that which distracts us or that which makes us drowsy. Tibetan teachers of every sect agree that what we do with our eyes (during meditation) could influence our experiences of agitation and fatigue.

Many zen teachers explain that neither tightly shut, nor wide open, the eye-lids should rest gently at “half-mast.”

Tantric lamas remind their students that gazing downward could antidote agitation while gazing upward could remedy drowsiness but that shutting our eyes undermines awareness. These tricks of the trade could help you to meditate like a Jedi.
