Sticks and Stones

In fourth grade my family

moved to a new suburb

and I was eager to make friends

with all the kids on my Block.

Upon introducing myself

one boy accosted me with choice words

of racially oriented slurs

I had hitherto been unfamiliar with.

The great irony is that the memory of this event

came to me while contemplating

how all communication is ultimately as non-graspable

as a mantra that is comprised of light

or like R2D2’s holo-projection of Princess Leia

in Star Wars: a New Hope.

Let us conclude

with a simple

call to action
